Nouakchott, Mauritania is a sleepy, dusty, very pleasant town 5 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Africa. I am staying with my friend from school, Alberto’s, buddy from the Peace Corps, who lives and works here in Nouakchott. Damian and his wife Mary have been so wonderful in their hospitality and […]
The Worlds Highest Bungy Jump
The worlds highest bungy jump beckoned my name from the instant I heard about its towering height, 216 meters (710 feet). It’s location was far from close to anywhere, but the distance would not stop me from conquering the crown jewel of an adrenaline junkie’s resume. This past January my two friends and I set […]
Asleep in Lesotho
Driving in Africa is always an adventure. You never know what you are going to run into. Whether its drunk drivers, crazy minibuses or animals hogging the street, you are always in for something memorable. This was the case for Mike and I as we drove through the lovely country of Lesotho. The unusual part […]

Djibouti, Djibouti
It’s really fun to say Djibouti. I keep finding myself just saying the word over and over-you should try it, it’s kind of fun. It’s also spelled neatly and one of those places, kind of like Timbuktu, that you’ve always heard of and never really knew exactly where it was or that people actually went […]
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
I spent the first half of today in Addis Ababa, which is the pleasant capital of Ethiopia and a major travel hub for Eastern Africa. This was my fifth trip to the dark continent and third in the last 16 months. I spent my time touring around the city with my Ethiopian tour guide in […]
Climbing Table Mountain
Table Mountain looms over Cape Town, South Africa like a mother elephant looms over her young in the African wild to protect and watch over them. It is a truly awe-inspiring sight that can be seen from anywhere in Cape Town like a beacon guiding you home. It is a large and impressive, perfectly placed […]
The Sands of Time
The Sahara Desert occupies the vast majority of North Africa stretching from the Red Sea and Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. The Sahara, “The Great Desert”, is the world’s largest hot desert, and second largest desert after Antarctica. At over 9,000,000 square kilometers, it is almost as large as the United States, and is larger […]
Robben Island
Robben Island is located about 12 kilometers from Cape Town, South Africa and is reached by ferry from the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. Since 1997, it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Cape Town and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. But for nearly 400 years, Robben […]
Death in Maputo Mozambique
We arrived in Maputo, Mozambique with no expectations. We decided to visit Mozambique on a whim because Mike and I were in nearby Nelspruit, South Africa after a four-day safari in Kruger Park. It was so close that we couldn’t pass up the opportunity which would turn into something we’d never forget.
