4 Days in Corfu, Greece

Corfu, a Greek Island in the Ionian Chain is the kind of place you go to once and never return to. It is way to fun to go back to because you may never leave. Corfu is home to the legendary Pink Palace hostel, the crown jewel of the famous European hostels and certainly the nicest and most fun of the ones that I have been to-which is nearly all of them.

The Pink Palace is the only place to stay in Corfu, not really but it seems that way. It is the destination of most young travelers heading to Greece. It’s kind of a right of passage. Some stay for a week, some for a month, some have been there for even longer. Corfu is the type of place that sucks you in and makes you not want to leave. It is so relaxed during the day and so crazy at night in typical Mediterranean fashion like Ibiza, South of France or the Italian Riviera.

We had a great room in the hotel part of the hostel which had AC, a balcony overlooking the island and the water and a full bathroom and shower. We did the famous booze cruise around Corfu Island, stopping off to jump off high rocks, swim in batcaves and do the cave jumps as well. Also, there was the infamous saturday night toga party which was as nuts as you’d imagine.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I was pretty sick from being run down and tired for the toga party so I only briefly attended and headed off to bed early but I heard some great stories and I am sure if any of you saw the Pink Palace on ‘Wild On’ last year, you can imagine how nuts the party got.

My last day in Corfu I was really sick. I just relaxed most of the day trying to drink a lot of water and trying to force myself to eat. I think all I needed was some rest and after finally arriving in Rhodes and sleeping all day and night I am feeling a lot better and ready to finish off my trip in style.

I went to here after graduating from college in ’95 (as did many of my friends). One of the best times a young man can have. I have stores from those 5 days that I will tell for the rest of my life(some of which are not fit for public consumption). Like you said, The Palace is kinda a right of passage – it’s the finish line. You either got there right after college or you didn’t. And if you didn’t, you are chump for the rest of your life. Every person I’ve met agrees with this statement. Even the ones that didn’t go.

I remember being in the sand dunes, down the beach around 4AM, sleep deprived, hungover, headached, starved, drunk, jet lagged, frozen hands, sunburn, aching legs, semi-naked, semi-conscious, semi-sane, screaming my head off with this tall blonde from Princeton thinking: Now, THIS is a party!!….

The Palace is like the Hotel California: You can check in, but you can never leave. Thanks Dr. George! 😉
