This was my 8th cruise with Azamara Club Cruises; which means I have also done 8 AzAmazing Evenings. This is when Azamara puts together something unique, special and cultural in one of its destinations on the cruise. I just experienced the AzAmazing Evening in Koper, Slovenia and it was my favorite without question. Here’s why!
Before the AzAmazing Evening in Koper, Slovenia I got to obviously explore Koper itself. Koper is a nice little port town very close to the border with Italy and the city of Trieste. You can explore the old town of Koper in an hour or so.
The only real things of note are the cathedral where you can climb the bell tower for excellent views. The other thing is the main square. It’s small by European standards but very nice. This would later be the sight for the AzAmazing Evening in Koper.
After exploring Koper, I headed out on a tour to see the Postojna Caves. I generally dislike tours for things like this and prefer to rent a car or driver and do it myself. However, the Postojna Caves are heavily touristed, especially by Asian tour groups so they’re always crowded. I didn’t have a reservation nor time to waste so I joined a tour.
The tour itself was not very good. It was crowded with several tour groups and was poorly managed by the Postojna Cave staff. That said, the caves were absolutely spectacular and baffling.
I have been to many caves in many parts of the world. The Postojna Caves are the best I’ve ever seen-at least dry. I say that because the ATM Cave in Belize is also spectacular but you swim and wade through water for almost all of it.
The Postojna Caves were cavernous. They were massive both in height and length. There were different chambers all over the place and the rock formations were preserved very well.
You went in and out via train that I thought would be cheesy. Turns out it was very necessary and even quite fun. It was like an amusement park ride at times. The only thing about the caves that I didn’t like was the setup.
They had a full on gift shop built into the caves at the end where they force you to spend 20 minutes browsing. It’s really annoying. Also, they have a full town of souvenir shops before and after you enter the caves. It’s an Asian tourists heaven but my hell. The tours also build in an hour on the front and half hour on the back to buy souvenirs and there was nothing I could do to make it go faster.
So my suggestion is to book the tour well ahead of time to avoid this and go at your own speed. It will save you some aggravation if you hate waiting for big tour groups like I do.
After the caves, it was time for the AzAmazing Evening in Koper. For the first time ever, a city in Slovenia closed off a main square for a foreign event. Azamara literally closed off the main square in Koper for an exciting and very fun musical show. It featured a Slovenian vocal orchestra that was quite well known in Europe. They even played at the Disneyland Paris 20th Anniversary.
Local Slovenians provided tremendous food and wine to accompany the show and a great time was had by all. I have to say Azamara did an amazing job planning this and I know it took some 2 years of negotiations to get it done. Well-done guys!
As I mentioned, I really enjoyed the AzAmazing Evening in Koper but I really enjoyed the town and surrounding areas as well. Last year I did a road trip for one day in Slovenia; which is a small country that punches above its weight. I highly recommend checking it out!
