A perfect day in Georgetown; that sounds delightful! Georgetown is an upscale and very cool neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C.. Georgetown is home to high-end shops, restaurants, hotels and it is a really pleasant place to stroll around. Georgetown is my favorite part of Washington, D.C.; which I think is one of the world’s most underrated cities. Here is my idea of a perfect day in Georgetown.
I went to college (University) at the University of Maryland, about 15 miles or so from Georgetown. I almost went to Georgetown University for college freshman (first) year and then I nearly transferred there junior (third) year.
So I nearly went to school at Georgetown twice and walking around the campus and the nearby area you can see why! Georgetown University boasts alumni like Bill Clinton and it is tucked neatly away from the hustle and bustle of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. It is always one of the first places I visit when I am in Georgetown.
It is also worth noting that while the 80’s cult classic movie ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ was set at Georgetown University, the campus scenes were actually filmed at the University of Maryland. In fact, my fraternity house was actually used in the movie!
From the University I like to walk the small side streets out to Wisconsin Avenue and walk by all the high-end shops and window shop at places I will never enter-I hate shopping! However, in Georgetown, the shops are just part of the scenery.
I like to take Wisconsin down toward the Potomac River and walk along the canals to the Georgetown Waterfront. The Waterfront is one of my favorite places in the world, yes the world, to have drinks with friends.
On a nice summer weekend day, there are yachts lined up and down the waterfront and people hop on and off from the yachts to the bars located at the Waterfront complex. It reminds me of college and is someplace I always try to go when I am with my friends in DC.
Heading back up to M Street, there are a ton of more shops and restaurants. M Street is really nice and has a lot of historic buildings and restaurants like Clyde’s and J. Paul’s. Also, if you stray off M Street, you will find some of my favorite places to eat in Georgetown like Paper Moon.
It’s funny; I have literally been to Georgetown 200 times and have only stayed overnight in Georgetown twice. The first time was back in December 1997 for my sophomore year fraternity formal at the Georgetown Inn on Wisconsin Avenue and last week.
I stayed at the Capella Washington, D.C. Hotel on 31st Street. This was the first time I had ever stayed in a Capella Hotel and it was fantastic. It’s easily one of the top luxury hotels in Georgetown; which includes the aforementioned Georgetown Inn and the Four Seasons.
The Capella stood out to me for a few reasons aside from the usual great rooms and beds that are common in most luxury hotels. The Capella is a boutique luxury hotel and really embraces that mantra. It has a really cool roof deck, infinity pool, bar and my favorite-a great, classic lobby bar.
Not to mention, the restaurant-The Grill Room, was divine. My buddy Jake and I ate there and were seriously impressed by the food; which included bone marrow spread, table made steak tartar, killer crab cakes and simply ridiculous steaks. We were quite pleased to say the least and I think I’ve found my new go to restaurant in DC.
If you’ve never been to Georgetown or Washington, D.C. for that matter-what are you waiting for? Take my word for it, this is a perfect day in Georgetown but go explore for yourself and find your Georgetown. Pretend you’re in St. Elmo’s Fire at The Tombs bar or the Exorcist if you prefer! Just check it out…just about every day is a perfect day in Georgetown!

Great post, great place and I will have to check out the Capella next time I am in DC. I usually stay at the Four Seasons for work frequent work trips to DC but you’ve sold me on the restaurant. I googled the hotel and it looks great as well. Thanks.
Keny, the Grill Room restaurant was phenomenal and I don’t just throw that word around. Let me know what you think if/when you stay at Capella.
