I did a Canadian Rockies Heli Snowshoeing Tour in Alberta and it was tremendous! I had no idea what that meant either before I did it but you’ll see from my photos and explanation why it’s so cool! First, you’ve got to get yourself from Calgary or Banff to Morley and use a company called Rockies Heli.
When you walk into the office you’ll automatically feel welcome from the friendly staff and then you’ll meet your pilot and get situated in the helicopter. It all happens pretty quickly and the best part is if you’re American, you’re basically getting a 25% discount with the great exchange rate to the Canadian Dollar!
You’ll begin the 20-minute flight taking you at 100mph+ over the Canadian Rockies and Kananaskis flying by Heart Mountain and Mount Yamnuska. The views are spectacular and you soon forget you’re in a helicopter as you simply gaze out the windows at the Rockies on either side of you. It’s breathtaking!
The helicopter then sets down atop a mountain in a flat wilderness area. You then start hiking or if there is a lot of snow then snowshoeing. This year is actually a record low year for snow so we just hiked. The pilot guides the group around and brings you to some seriously awesome lookout points.
You look out and see valleys and mountains and snow covered trees and you can even see Downtown Calgary some 50 miles away. However, the best and certainly the warmest part of a Canadian Rockies Heli Snowshoeing tour is that you get copious amounts of hot chocolate and Bailey’s! Don’t worry, the pilot doesn’t drink any-yes I asked!
After hot chocolate and Bailey’s the guide will take you around the back of the mountain where you’re pretty much guaranteed to find deep snow. We did for sure and my whole leg went down in it and snow in shoes! However, that’s what you’re there for so I loved it.
The flight home is much shorter; just about 8-10 minutes as there is no sightseeing and you’re back at base. So in a short time, you really get a unique helicopter perspective of the Canadian Rockies, a fun hike and a fine spirit! Gotta love Canada and I don’t like many people more than Albertans. They’re nice, thoughtful and generous and they certainly have a flair for adventure!

How cool! Sounds like a really great experience. How long did the hike last?
