Washington DC is one of my favorite cities in the United States. I went to college right outside the District at Maryland and essentially grew up going to DC a lot. One of my favorite places to go out to and eat at is PS 7 Restaurant. PS 7 is a chic and cool restaurant/lounge right in the Gallery Place/Chinatown neighborhood of DC, just a block or two away from the Verizon Center in a newer, cool part of town. I highly recommend you stop by and sample the delicious appetizers and great drinks to get your night started next time you’re in DC.
The name PS 7 is a play on the the initials of the owner Pete Smith and the address of 777 I (eye) Street. I have been going there for years and always thought it was a New Yorker who went down to DC and named it after his public school (PS); however, I just found out otherwise and now it makes more sense. The restaurant and lounge are separated and there are separate menus for the lounge and restaurant. The appetizers to me are the best things to eat at PS 7.
The tuna sliders are absolutely to die for. They serve them in orders of 3, 6 or 9 and they are bite size mini sliders with delicious sushi style tuna inside. I could literally eat 30 of them. Some other awesome eats are the macaroni and cheese balls, steak and cheese and a recreation of the Pittsburgh sandwich favorite, Primanti Bros. But the best part of PS 7 is the service.
My good friends Gina and Jake both work the bar at PS 7 and concoct some of the best drinks you’ve ever tasted. Gina actually competes in drink competitions around the country and is really well known in the DC bar and restaurant scene. While I usually stick to basic cocktails, they do offer some cocktails that people rave about including several innovative varieties of margaritas, martinis and even a cereal based cocktail that my buddy Geno loves to drink.
The lounge is open, airy and a cool place to hang out and start your night. The conversation is always good and you won’t be disappointed by the food. If you head there, stop in the lounge and say hi to Gina because she is the best and a rising star!
